Live at Lost pines

Music is as much a part of Texas-past and present-as bluebonnets, starry skies and pecan pie. In fact, many of the finest songwriters in music history have come from Texas. Read more ›

SATURDAY, AUGUST 30, 7:30 - 9:30 pm, KISSINGER

A fun, mix of pop sound and original lyrics, Kissinger has been a fixture of the indie/rock scene in Austin for more than 10 years.  Lead singer, "Chopper," has been described as a tall, Tex-ified Elvis Costello. Former lead-guitarist Steve Garvey now plays keyboard exclusively.  H. Luther White (the H. is for Hurricane) and Garvey lend their voices to the mix.  Underwater, their third full-length record, following Me & Otto, Charm and a handful of EPs, is something special.  What the producers captured on this record are the kind of songs that take 10 years to reach. Underwater explores the depths of a songwriter in full voice and of a band that has transcended its years of white-van rock and roll tours to emerge with a sense of musical urgency and clarity.

SUNDAY, AUGUST 31, 7:30 - 9:30 pm, JIMMY LAFAVE

Mixing blues, jazz, and country influences with the lessons learned from his musical hero, Bob Dylan, Jimmy LaFave is both a perceptive songwriter and an appealing singer.  Although LaFave has lived in Austin for nearly 20 years, many people still think of him as being from Oklahoma because of his strong musical ties to the state and what he often refers to as its "red dirt music."  It was in this landscape that LaFave began to define his sound and soak up a combination of his experiences among authentic songwriters from the tradition of Woody Guthrie. The years in Stillwater, a town that LaFave said contained a magical energy, left their mark.  Other Oklahoma musicians besides Guthrie who inspired LaFave include J.J. Cale, Chet Baker and Leon Russell.  At a young age, LaFave's family moved from a small Texas farming community to the Dallas suburb of Mesquite, where he attended junior high and high school. By the early teens LaFave was making music perched behind his Sears and Roebuck drum kit.  His family later moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma, where he finished high school.
