The Lost Pines Region takes its name from a large forest of Loblolly pines that thrive here, separated from the pines of East Texas by more than 80 miles. Local legend holds that the majestic trees grew here after Native-American runners carried seedlings from East Texas to comfort a homesick girl who had married into a Central Texas tribe far from home. Botanists say they may be left over from the glacier activity of an earlier, wetter age when pine forests covered much of the land that became Texas. Whichever legend holds true, the Lost Pines are a natural treasure for all to enjoy.
