January

  • MLK Jr. March and Festival (Austin). More than 10,000 march to historic Huston-Tillotson University for an outdoor festival with jazz, blues and gospel performances.
  • Bastrop County Martin Luther King Holiday Commission Walk (varies). Occurs the third Monday of each year in January. The celebration rotates among the cities of Bastrop, Elgin and Smithville. This year, the event will be held in Bastrop on January 21, 2009.
  • Carnival Brasilero (Austin). Flamboyant costumes, Brazilian samba music and an uninhibited spirited atmosphere make Austin’s Carnival one of the biggest such festivals outside of Brazil. The event is January 31, 2009 at Palmer Events Center.
  • “Second Saturday Market” (Bastrop) held on Main and Pine Streets in downtown Bastrop with exhibit and sale of artwork from local artists and artisans.

February

  • African-American History Month Celebrations and Programs (Bastrop). Activities scheduled throughout the month.
  • Austin Marathon (formerly Freescale Marathon) (Austin). A popular marathon attracting nearly 11,000 participants from around the world.
  • “Second Saturday Market” (Bastrop) held on Main and Pine Streets in downtown Bastrop with exhibit and sale of artwork from local artists and artisans.

March

  • Bastrop Pedal through the Pines (Bastrop). Series of bicycle rides circling Bastrop State Park and the surrounding scenic countryside. SAG wagons provide support for this all-ages event.
  • “Second Saturday Market” (Bastrop) held on Main and Pine Streets in downtown Bastrop with exhibit and sale of artwork from local artists and artisans.
  • South by Southwest (SXSW) (Austin). Talented musicians, filmmakers and multimedia artists from around the world gather to showcase music, film and interactive media during one the city’s biggest events.
  • Star of Texas Fair & Rodeo (Austin). Austin goes cowboy as PRCA competitors hit the arena and area students exhibit prize livestock. Features headline entertainment by well-known artists.

April

  • Bastrop Yesterfest (Bastrop). Takes place on Main Street in downtown Bastrop on the last Saturday of the month. Sponsored by the Bastrop Opera House and the Downtown Business Alliance, Yesterfest celebrates Bastrop’s colorful history with music and dance pioneer skills demonstrations, street dances, historic reenactments, cowboy roping, baking competitions, quilting, children’s games and food.
  • Austin Fine Arts Festival (Austin). Nearly 200 national artists, top local restaurants, music stages and hands-on art activities for adults and children fill a downtown park.
  • Capitol 10K (Austin). Texas’ largest race and one of the nation’s top 10K runs draws some 10,000 serious and not-so-serious runners.
  • Texas Hill Country Wine & Food Festival (Austin). Featuring the creations of the best Texas and nationally known chefs and wineries.
  • “Second Saturday Market” (Bastrop) held on Main and Pine Streets in downtown Bastrop with exhibit and sale of artwork from local artists and artisans.

  • Senior Citizens Quilt Show (Bastrop).
  • Relay for Life (Bastrop).
  • Heritage Homes Tour (Austin). Walking tour of seven historic homes in one Austin’s most colorful historic boroughs.

  • Juneteenth (Bastrop). Honoring the emancipation of slaves in Texas, June 19 is celebrated with a parade, picnics and dances in Bastrop and nearby towns on the Saturday closest to June 19.
  • Movies in the Park Series (Bastrop). Movie series in Fisherman’s and Bob Bryant Parks May through August.
  • “Second Saturday Market” (Bastrop) held on Main and Pine Streets in downtown Bastrop with exhibit and sale of artwork from local artists and artisans.

July

  • Fourth of July Patriotic Festival (Bastrop). Celebration on the first Saturday of July. Includes a Pet and Pal Parade at 10:30 a.m. and continues with an arts and crafts fair, picnics and food booths in Fisherman’s Park. Evening ends with a patriotic concert and spectacular fireworks display.
  • Fourth of July Fireworks & Symphony (Austin). The largest Independence Day celebration in the state held on the shores of downtown’s Town Lake. The Austin Symphony performs patriotic classics and the ever-popular 1812 Overture, highlighted by a 75-millimeter Howitzer cannon, courtesy of the National Guard Salute Battery. The concert finale backdrop is the spectacular mile-high fireworks display over the city’s skyline.

  • Bastrop Homecoming and Rodeo (Bastrop). July 31 through August 2, Bastrop’s biggest annual party, when everyone returns for family and class reunions, rodeo, Grand Parade, carnival and dancing.

  • Hispanic Heritage Month Programs and Activities (Bastrop).
  • Austin City Limits Music Festival (Austin). Annual festival in Zilker Park features more than 130 musical performances, giving fans a mix of rock, roots, gospel, bluegrass, funk, hip-hop and more.
  • “Second Saturday Market” (Bastrop) held in downtown Bastrop with exhibit and sale of artwork from local artists and artisans.
  • Bastrop 2nd Annual Lost Pines NatureFest 2008 (Bastrop). September 27 at Fisherman’s Park. The nature festival is filled with family-orientated activities to reconnect with the great outdoors and to encourage the care, conservation and preservation of the earth’s natural resources. Paddling events offered for experienced and novices to experience the Colorado River. Informal educational activities and fun demos include a reptile show, “Call of the Wild” native plants, and other environmental educational programs. Food, drink and local artisans.

October

  • “Second Saturday Market” (Bastrop) in downtown Bastrop with exhibit and sale of artwork from local artists and artisans.
  • Austin Film Festival (Austin). The ever-growing conference and film extravaganza brings thousands of film aficionados, celebrities and fans to Austin each year. Includes the Screenwriters Conference, Heart of Film Screenplay Competition, Prime Time Television Competition, Film Competition, Film Screenings Program and more.
  • Texas Book Festival (Austin). Showcasing Texas and nationally known authors, festival at the Texas State Capitol features panel discussions, book readings, signings, live music and a children’s tent.
  • Oktoberfest (Bastrop and Elgin). The second annual event at historic Camp Swift includes a Volksmarch, entertainment, food and military historical learning with aircraft and vehicle displays.
  • Halloween Festival (Bastrop). Witches, ghosts and goblins take to the streets for a fun-filled event complete with haunted houses, food booths and music.

November

  • Veterans Day Classic Car Show (Bastrop). Veterans Day weekend, Nov 7-9. Auto aficionados display hundreds of vintage cars and motorcycles. Ceremony honors veterans. Food, music and entertainment.
  • “Second Saturday Market” in downtown Bastrop with exhibit and sale of artwork from local artists and artisans.
  • Thanksgiving Arts & Crafts Event and the Harvest Art Fest (Bastrop). Held on the Saturday and Sunday after Thanksgiving. Local Texas artisans display jewelry, pottery, paintings, leatherwork and more on Chestnut Street.
  • Bastrop’s River of Lights (Bastrop). Holiday lights and music along the Colorado River nightly starting day after Thanksgiving through the end of December, 6:00-9:00 p.m. Entrances to the River of Lights at Fisherman’s Park and Ferry Park.
  • Chuy’s Christmas Parade (Austin). A procession down Congress Avenue of giant balloons, marching bands, vintage cars, celebrities and floats usher in the season.

December

  • Holiday Historic Home Tour and Market Days (Bastrop). Held second Saturday. Tours of homes and historic buildings decorated for the season give glimpse of Bastrop’s history. Gift shopping in historic downtown on Main and Pine Streets during the Second Saturday Market Day.
  • Bastrop’s River of Lights (Bastrop). Holiday lights and music along the Colorado River nightly starting day after Thanksgiving through the end of December, 6:00-9:00 p.m. Entrances to the River of Lights are at Fisherman’s Park and Ferry Park.
  • Bastrop’s Christmas Parade (Bastrop). Features more than 100 lighted entries, from floats to cowboys on horseback. Parade begins at 6:00 p.m. and winds down Main Street.
  • Trail of Lights and Zilker Christmas Tree (Austin). Month-long festival begins the weekend after Thanksgiving with the lighting of the Zilker Tree. Pedestrian Trail of Lights transforms a mile-long stretch of Zilker Park into a wonderland of lights.
